Possible day plans

These are starting points, not group decisions. The main guide remains neutral so everyone can explore the options without being steered toward one person's schedule.

No invented ship times: the sequence is intentional, but the clock is flexible. Each morning, copy arrival, excursion meeting point, and all-aboard time from Avalon's Daily Bulletin and work backward with a generous return buffer.
Day 1 · Nov 24

Basel

Low-pressure embarkation plan: old town and lunch, then board early.

  1. After arrivalLeave luggage and orient yourselves
Confirm the exact ship berth before walking away.
  2. Late morningMarktplatz → Rathaus → Basel Minster
A compact old-town line with the Pfalz Rhine view at the end.
  3. LunchTry a Basel specialty
Keep this close to the center; this is not the day for a complicated reservation.
  4. Final stopMittlere Brücke, then return to the ship
Aim to board well before the stated 5:00pm deadline.

If energy is low

Marktplatz, Minster terrace, lunch, ship.

If arriving Nov 23

Use the evening for the special dinner; keep embarkation day relaxed.

Day 2 · Nov 25

Breisach / Black Forest

This day depends on the excursion selected; do not layer an ambitious independent plan on top.

  1. MorningTake the selected Avalon excursion
Black Forest for scenery and traditions, or Freiburg for city, Minster, and market.
  2. Free timeFreiburg Minster and Rathausplatz market
If the excursion allows, use free time for the Bächle streets and market food.
  3. ReturnFollow the excursion's meeting instructions
Breisach, Freiburg, and the Black Forest are not interchangeable walking destinations.

City preference

Choose Freiburg when architecture, food, and the Christmas market matter most.

Scenery preference

Choose the Black Forest when landscape and regional traditions matter most.

Day 3 · Nov 26

Strasbourg

A natural walking loop, offered as an alternative to the included guided walk.

  1. StartStrasbourg Cathedral
See the interior early; verify the astronomical-clock access separately.
  2. ThenPlace Kléber and the market streets
Browse before bags and crowds become tiring.
  3. Middle of dayLunch near the old center
Chez Yvonne if reserved; keep one nearby backup.
  4. AfternoonPetite France → Ponts Couverts
The prettiest continuous walk and an easy place to turn back early.
  5. ReturnNavigate to the actual berth
Do not use a generic Strasbourg pin as the return destination.

Rain plan

Cathedral, Palais Rohan museum, long lunch, shorter market loop.

More wandering

Add the Barrage Vauban terrace before returning.

Day 4 · Nov 27

Heidelberg or Mainz

Treat these as mutually exclusive choices, not one combined itinerary.

  1. Choose oneHeidelberg: castle and old town
Castle first, then Hauptstrasse and the Old Bridge.
  2. If conditions suitPhilosophers' Walk
Only add it when daylight, weather, footwear, and excursion timing cooperate.
  3. AlternativeMainz: Cathedral and Gutenberg focus
Use the guided option for a compact history-centered day.
  4. EveningRüdesheim after docking
Keep enough energy for the overnight stop rather than exhausting the afternoon.

Heidelberg fits

Castle views, walking, university-town atmosphere.

Mainz fits

Printing history, cathedral, easier urban pacing.

Day 4–5 · Overnight

Rüdesheim

Use the overnight flexibility; there is no reason to rush every sight into one block.

  1. On arrivalDrosselgasse orientation
Walk the lane before choosing a tavern.
  2. If operatingCable car to Niederwalddenkmal
Prioritize daylight and verify seasonal hours and weather.
  3. EveningWine tavern and Rüdesheimer Kaffee
Stay flexible rather than locking the group into one venue.
  4. Next morningShort second look, then Rhine Gorge deck time
Dress warmly before scenic sailing begins.
Day 5 · Nov 28

Rhine Gorge / Koblenz

The ship is the main attraction during the gorge.

  1. Scenic sailingClaim a deck or lounge position
Bring layers, camera, and binoculars; move sides rather than camping in one view.
  2. Lorelei stretchStay outside if conditions permit
This is the segment not to trade for indoor downtime.
  3. KoblenzDeutsches Eck first
Add the fortress cable car only when the published stop time leaves a safe margin.

Short stop

Deutsches Eck and old town only.

Long stop

Add Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, checking return transport before crossing.

Day 6 · Nov 29

Cologne

A compact cathedral-and-Kölsch day with optional culture branches.

  1. StartCologne Cathedral
Go inside before market and station-area crowds build.
  2. ThenHohenzollern Bridge viewpoint
Short, flat, and easy to omit in bad weather.
  3. LunchTraditional Brauhaus
Früh is convenient; Peters or Sion are alternatives if it is overwhelmed.
  4. AfternoonChoose market, Museum Ludwig, or old town
One branch is enough; preserve the return buffer.

Art branch

Museum Ludwig beside the cathedral.

Food branch

Market snacks followed by a shorter Brauhaus stop.

Day 7–8 · Nov 30–Dec 1

Amsterdam

This is the best place to split by interest; timed museum tickets should anchor each branch.

  1. First anchorUse the booked museum or canal-cruise time
Do not plan two major timed museums back-to-back unless everyone wants that pace.
  2. Museum branchVan Gogh or Rijksmuseum → Museumplein area
Add the second museum only as an intentional full-day choice.
  3. Neighborhood branchJordaan → Nine Streets → brown café
A flexible walking alternative without constant reservations.
  4. EveningRegroup for dinner
Moeders if reserved; otherwise choose a convenient meeting point rather than crossing the city twice.
  5. Departure morningKeep the plan close and simple
Disembarkation and onward travel take priority over one last distant attraction.

Rain plan

One museum, café, covered canal cruise, dinner.

No-ticket plan

Jordaan, Nine Streets, canal belt, Foodhallen.
